Startup programs can slow down the operating system, especially on computers with low performance hardware. During the startup process, Windows will take its time to load all applications which are set to launch automatically. Disabling this feature, for non critical programs, will reduce the time it takes for the operating system to complete its startup process. Starter can detect all startup applications on your computer and it displays them in the same place, making it possible to disable them in a single run. It provides straightforward functions and it organizes each item in a smart fashion, so you can locate a specific program immediately.

Starter is free and you can use it on any Windows version, from Win 95 to Win 7. There are no special requirements to meet, so you can run Starter right after a speedy setup procedure. The installation package is only 664 KB, which does not take long to download.

Startup programs are categorized in a tree structure, located on the left side of the interface and they are listed in the larger area on the right. Disabling an application's automatic startup feature requires nothing more than clicking a check box, next to its entry. You may bring up a program's properties or change its startup settings on separate windows. It is also possible to remove applications from the list or add new ones.

The software's functionality does not stop at startup programs. You can also find running processes and services, on different tabs. The available options allow you to start new processes, terminate existing ones, or bring up their properties. You can perform the same actions on services as well.

If you are an advanced user, you can change a startup program's registry section and make certain adjustments regarding a service's startup type, error control and more. In addition, Starter lets you back up and restore certain registry sections and export your settings as a file, in plain text or HTML format.

Pros

You can prevent any program from launching automatically or enable this feature for others. Besides controlling startup applications, you can terminate running processes and services. In addition, you may change various settings for services and startup items, export your settings and back up certain registry sections.

Cons

There are no serious issues to encounter. Starter gives you the possibility of deciding which programs are allowed to launch automatically. It comes with everything you need to make your operating system start and run faster.
